EXAMINATION MISCONDUCT: ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE
ASSALAMU ALAYKUM
Education represents the cornerstone of the society and major instruments through which it can attain accelerated development. Up till date there is no any acceptable measurement of formal education other than examination.
As such examination misconduct is Islamically an unethical conduct, although there are no categorical Islamic text on examination misconduct there are various Qur’anic and prophetic text that condemn cheating and non-fulfillment of obligation which are manifestation of examination malpractices.
Examination malpractices or misconduct can be defined as those conducts during examination that is unethical or improper.
The doer of examination malpractice have not full concentration as the act is evil in the high of Islam and the prophet (SAW) reported to have said: “Evil is what one mind is unstable with and hide it from people”, examination as known are usually tests to verify one’s precise knowledge about a subject matters, this is done based on laid down rules which in truth should not be violated by any of the parties concerned, since the rules are by mutual agreement. As a young people seeking for knowledge, examination present us opportunities for us to cheat and most likely to be involved in fraud and it comes in so many ways such as:
· Bringing in already prepared answers
· Impersonations
· Copying from the answer of fellow student during examination.
· Some students connive with other fraudulent people in the examination board who eventually will help them in either slotting in their solved papers etc.
After the examination and the result is finally released those student end up scoring higher grade than those who genuinely worked for their grade, and all those are aspects of cheating and come under not fulfilling your obligation as a Muslims.
Allah says Q5:V1
O you who believe, fulfill the obligation…….
He said: Q17:V34
And fulfill every agreement (treaty and pledge) indeed every agreement will be asked about (on the Day of Judgment).
Brothers & Sisters!
Remember every Muslim is bounded by their contractual agreement. And it was stated on the rules and regulation of examination in the school “shun any act of examination malpractice”.
The messenger of Allah (PBUH) said “Muslims are bound to the condition of their contract (Abu-Daud)”.
Examination malpractice and if cut you will be expelled, Is one of our schools condition. Even though no body sees you while committing such act of examination malpractice, remember Allah is aware of what you do and your act is been recorded.
Unfortunately, in most of our schools today examination malpractice l ook inviting as a matter of fact that is why a lot of students are immersed in it. The attitude of students now is “why do I have to work so hard, not sleeping in the day and night when I can easily pass my exam by spending small amount of money”. As for the Muslim is concerned his attitude must not to be a part of this evil. May Allah be our guide.
A true Muslim is always conscious of his lord in whatever he does. It is the unbelievers who adopt the saying “the end justifies the means”. As for the Muslim, the end and the means through which it is achieved must both be justified.
The prophet (PBUH) said : “on the day of judgment the feet of the son of Adam will not move away till he is question about five matters ……….. How he acquired his property, on what he spent it, and what he did regarding what he knew” (Tirmidhi)
How will the people whom has cheated to pass their exam or cheated to get certificate and earned property through it, will answer this questions.
Remember! Any time you feel like committing any act that is a sin, against the laws of Allah, always remember that even if all the people of this world cannot see you, Allah is forever aware of what you do and your act is being recorded
Q 2: V 23
“Fear Allah and know that Allah is all aware of everything”.
Allah says in Q 17: V 13v- 14
“[It will be said], “Read your record, sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant.”
“Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear burden of another. And never would we punish until we sent a Messenger”.
